Leaf Veins as a Delivery Network

A leaf delivers water to every cell through a branching network of veins. Thick veins split into thinner ones, and small loops give water a second route if a vein is cut. Students trace a leaf, count branch levels and design a cooling channel for a phone case.

What happens

In most broad leaves the main vein splits into 4–6 levels of smaller veins. Loops between the smallest veins mean a torn leaf keeps working.

Activity

Place a leaf under paper and rub with a pencil. Count the branch levels and measure the width of each level. Compare the ratio between levels.

Where it is used

Cooling plates for batteries and chips use branching channels to spread coolant with less pumping pressure.
