When to Visit the Namib

(Details)

Introduction

The Namib is one of the oldest deserts on earth and stays dry all year. Temperature and wind change a lot by season, and that shapes how a dune day feels.

Things to Try

  • May to September
  • Cool mornings and warm days. The most comfortable months for walking.
  • October to December
  • Hot afternoons and clear skies. Start before sunrise and finish by eleven.
  • January to April
  • The hottest months, with rare storms inland. Good light, fewer visitors.
  • Coastal Fog
  • Near the coast, morning fog rolls in most of the year and burns off by midday.

The Varnelo View

We run the Dune Crossing all year and change the start time by season. Summer tours start at the gate opening.

Winter nights can drop close to freezing, so camp trips include extra blankets from June to August.
