Layer It, Darling

Dear Plum, how do I make a room feel lived in without it looking messy?
Layer it, darling. Books, but not in neat rows: stacked, open, a little dog-eared. A throw left where someone used it. Art that arrived over years, not in one delivery. Let a few things show their age: a leather chair with a soft seat, a rug with a story, a table with rings from good dinners. The line between mess and warmth is intention. Light matters too. A ceiling light shows every pile, but a low lamp turns the same pile of shoes into a still life. Every object should look like it was invited, not like it forgot to leave.

Then find the balance. Put something soft next to something hard, something glossy next to something worn. When everything agrees, a room goes flat. When things disagree a little, the room wakes up. Let objects overlap. A stack that leans, a frame just off center, a chair pulled back from the table: these are signs of life. And leave a gap. A room that is complete is a room you stop seeing. Keep a shelf free for next year, a wall for a painting you have not met yet. The goal is presence, not perfection.
Every object should look like it was invited, not like it forgot to leave.
