Painted Walls: A Visit with Oona Madrigal

Studio visit with a mural painter

Oona Madrigal paints walls by hand, and she has painted more of ours than anyone else.

We spent a morning in her Glassell Park studio, looking at sketches, pigment tests and a folding screen she has been working on for two years.

Her murals start from the room, not from the image. She visits at different hours, watches the light and then paints what the room seems to want.

Two of her walls appear in Velvet Hour and Casa Marisol.
