About
Quoin & Slug is a fictional foundry built as a design exercise. It shows six real open-source families and prices them as a foundry would.
The name
A quoin is the wedge that locks set type into the chase. A slug is a strip of lead between lines, or one cast line of type.
The fonts
Each family keeps its real name and its designers. Files load unmodified from the Google Fonts CDN under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. The foundry did not draw them and does not sell them.

Reading the guides
Magenta lines sit on the first line of every specimen and move with the axes.
Type, Hxgp
- Ascent
- Top of the line box the font reserves above the baseline.
- Cap height
- Top of flat capitals such as H.
- x-height
- Top of flat lowercase such as x.
- Baseline
- The line letters sit on.
- Descent
- Bottom of the space reserved for g, p and y.
Values come from the font's own metrics for the current axis settings, read by the browser (CSS cap and ex units). Round shapes overshoot the lines on purpose.
