Folio 11
Questions
Nine answers. Anything else: keepers@tarnwick.example.
Do I need to book?
No. Boats go through in the order they arrive. Groups of four or more boats email the keepers a day ahead.
How long does the flight take?
About 3 h 10 min going up with no boats ahead, a little less going down. Each boat ahead adds about 18 min.
Can two boats share a lock?
No. The chambers are 2.2 m wide, so one narrowboat at a time.
My boat is 18.4 m. Can I get through?
No. Locks 3 and 4 take 18.0 m. The other nine take 21.3 m.
Where is the water point?
Basin pontoons, Long Pound at the Lock 7 end, and Hollin Pound by the bridge. There is no pump-out on the flight.
Where do I pay the toll?
At the keepers’ hut by Lock 10, by card or cash, before you leave the flight.
What does “Restricted” mean?
The lock works but slower, or only with a keeper. Lock 6 fills in 13 min instead of 8 while one paddle is out of use.
What happens during a stoppage?
The locks named are drained or chained. Boats wait above or below; the moorings either side stay open.
Can I walk the towpath when the flight is closed?
Yes, except fenced sections beside drained chambers, which are signed on the day.
